A recent article in a Sydney, Australia, newspaper was sharply critical of both the U.S. supermarket industry and America's Federal Trade Commission.
The former came under attack for practicing pedestrian, unimaginative and unappealing retailing. The latter was criticized for employing an arbitrarily restrictive definition of "premium natural or organic food retailing" to block the proposed merger of Whole Foods and Wild Oats. The current condition of supermarket retailing and the FTC's narrow ruling, the story said, are each symptoms of a harsh reality of U.S. retailing: Supermarketing in America is in a rut.
