NEW YORK -- Innovative new products and diverse and rapidly changing styles are generating sales gains in the mass retail hair care business.
According to Information Resources Inc. mass retail shampoo sales increased 5.2% in the 52 weeks ended June 17 to reach $1.11 billion. Sales of hair sprays and spritzes rose 4.2% to $400.8 million, and sales of hair styling and setting gels and mousses increased 3.4% to $639.23 billion. Sales of hair conditioners and creme rinses advanced an impressive 8.9%. (All figures are for sales in supermarkets, drug stores and discount stores, excluding those operated by Wal-Mart Stores Inc.)
