NEW YORK -- The skin care industry has relied for nearly a century on a skin typology developed in the early 1900s by Helena Rubenstein. The industry legend distinguished skin types as dry, oily, combination or sensitive--classifications which still dominate the labels of most skin care products available today.
A physician, Leslie Baumann, has developed a new, more flexible system designed to help consumers select products and help dermatologists recommend appropriate products for their patients. The system classifies skin on the basis of four parameters: dry or oily, sensitive or resistant, pigmented or nonpigmented, and wrinkled or tight.
