Abstract
Chicken meat is clearly the most important source of human Campylobacter infection in New Zealand. This source explains most cases and also provides the best opportunity for controlling our severe epidemic. The dominant importance of chicken me at as a source of human infection is supported by epidemiological, laboratory, intervention, and ecological evidence. The New Zealand Food Safety Authority has also identified poultry as the main source. The serious scientific debate has now shifted to the more productive task of finding the most effective interventions to protect the New Zealand population from this source of infection.
