The 20th anniversary of Ernesto Deira's death occasioned this major retrospective featuring 122 of the Argentine painter's works from 1960 through '86. Deira (1928-1986), who began his professional life as a lawyer, turned to painting in his mid-20s under the influence of Velazquez and Goya. He was particularly struck by the latter's Black Paintings, which he'd seen in 1953 on his honeymoon in Europe. Like Goya, Deira embraced his own turbulent era as the subject for his work, and confronted the unwieldy themes of war, love, and mythological beginnings through passionate and critical image-making.
