WASHINGTON, D.C. - At least 20 million people in some 50 countries around the world engage in artisanal and small-scale mining, and a further 100 million people depend on it for their livelihood, almost always in appalling environmental and social conditions, according to Communities and Small-Scale Mining (CASM), a multi-donor global program supported by the World Bank.
