Sep. 5--The Toledo Fire Department's pumpers carry enough water to extinguish a burning car, but what if something bigger caught fire while crossing the 8,800 feet of bridge and viaduct that make up the Veterans' Glass City Skyway?
During an emergency drill the fire department and the Lucas County Emergency Management Agency conducted shortly before the landmark cable-stayed bridge opened in June, firefighters discovered that setting up a five-pumper hose relay to get water from hydrants at either end to an accident scene high above the Maumee River was cumbersome, at best.
