Sep. 5--Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis cut off speculation about the Fighting Irish quarterback position, naming true freshman Jimmy Clausen as the starter for Saturday night's game at No. 14 Penn State.
"I think he's ready to run the offense," Weis said Tuesday. "If I didn't think he was ready, I wouldn't do this."
Clausen was the last of three quarterbacks that Weis used in a 33-3 loss to Georgia Tech at Notre Dame Stadium, the worst season-opening defeat in school history. The Irish gained just 122 total yards, including minus-8 yards on the ground.
