Sep. 7--The big question in Washington and on Wall Street this week is, where is the economy headed?

And per usual, the answer depends on whom you ask.

One thing is clear -- whenever you hear political types saying that the economy is "fundamentally sound," it's probably a good idea to believe otherwise.

After all, the Titanic was fundamentally sound except for that bit in the front that got banged up on the ice.

The iceberg the U.S. economy has slammed into this summer is the subprime mortgage mess.
