Sep. 7--BUCHANAN -- On a warm morning in late August, Dan Lovelace is dodging spiderwebs as the utility vehicle in which he rides bounces over a bumpy road that snakes up a Botetourt County ridge.
"This would be a perfect area for some timber thinning," he says, sweeping his hand toward a hillside covered with just a few oak trees and lots of non- mast-bearing hardwoods and evergreens.
Later, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries wildlife biologist surveys the greenery in a man-made wildlife opening.
"This is mostly orchard grass, and it won't do much to attract deer," he says, bluntly.
