VIENNA -- Genetically determined loss of epidermal barrier function has emerged as a major predisposing factor for atopic dermatitis, Dr. Alan D. Irvine reported at the 16th Congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.

It has long been noted that genetic factors play a role in atopic dermatitis, with familial occurrence being common. A concordance rate of approximately 80% has been found among monozygotic twins, according to the study investigators. Most research thus far has focused on candidate genes involved in innate and adaptive immunity, and although significant associations have been reported, the results overall have been inconclusive.
