There are plenty of good reasons to abolish the death penalty once and for all.
It's expensive.
Is it worth spending millions more to keep a prisoner on death row than simply in prison? To exhaust all appeals and pay lawyer fees and other expenses and add huge sums to the cost of keeping a condemned prisoner alive in order to execute him? The governor of Maryland says his state would have had an extra $22.4 million to spend on more pressing crime needs over the last 30 years without the death penalty, according to The Economist.
It's a distraction.
As the Maryland governor suggests, why not put the time and money to better use that is ...
