Swartz recalled as farm advocate: Legislator's death a blow to Rensselaer County's agricultural community.

Sep. 10--SCHODACK -- Neighbors and colleagues remembered slain Rensselaer County Legislator Edward R. Swartz on Sunday as a passionate farmer whose untimely death robs the agricultural community of their strongest advocate.

Swartz, 50, tended about 1,000 acres of corn and carried his cellphone with him in the fields all day to take calls related to his work as a legislator. He was a frequent advocate for farmers' rights in the Legislature.

"Just about anything that affects a farmer, Ed was involved in," said Kenneth Herrington, a fellow legislator and farmer. "He's going to be sorely missed by the farmers in Rensselaer County."
