Two breakthrough processes for manufacturing materials that prime contractor Lockheed is using for the F-22 stealth fighter have attracted wide interest in the aerospace industry.
"We've got people beating our door down," Lockheed's Jim Carroll said in a recent interview. Carroll declined to name the firms that have shown interest.
Carroll called F-22 materials technology "a combination of processes and materials that really are expanding the state- of-the-art."
The two processes, which, Lockheed said, promise cost savings and higher quality over previous approaches, are called Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP), and Resin Transfer Molding (RTM). Lockheed is ...
