Sep. 11--RALEIGH -- Durham novelist Michael Peterson on Monday fought for a new trial in the 2001 murder of his wife, with the state Supreme Court hearing oral arguments that ranged from the couple's finances to the similar 1985 death of another woman in Germany.
Appellate lawyer Thomas Maher said those and other issues contributed to an unfair trial four years ago, resulting in a first-degree murder conviction and sentence of life in prison without parole for Peterson -- who had published several successful novels, was a failed mayoral candidate and once authored columns for The Herald-Sun.
