Boston University researchers think they've discovered how to pump up antibiotics' effectiveness, opening the door for a Hub start-up they're working with to develop "superdrugs."
"If things work out the way we hope, people who get really nasty infections will be less likely to die," said James Collins, head of BU's Applied Biodynamics Laboratory.
Collins' team reported this month in the journal Cell that adding compounds called "RecA inhibitors" to antibiotics like Cipro and ampicillin can make germs die more quickly.
"We can make `super-Cipro' or `super-ampicillin,' " Collins told the Herald.
