Hundreds of logging trucks are hauling heavier loads across Wisconsin under a new state law despite warnings the extra weight may be unsafe for some bridges and cause others to deteriorate faster.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation issued 476 permits from Jan. 1 to Aug. 15 for trucks to carry up to 98,000 pounds of raw forest products. Some counties don't know if their aging bridges can safely carry that much weight.
The DOT has already closed 41 state bridges to the heavier loads after analysis showed they would be at risk for damage or collapse because of the extra stress. Those bridges have sign ...
