Does your dog seem down-in-the-dumps? You know when you're feeling depressed; dogs can experience depression, too. When people are depressed, they can talk about it and hopefully facilitate treatment. But dogs use their own subtle, nonverbal signs which their human companions need to pick up on. As with human depression, dog depression can be successfully treated when properly diagnosed.
"Many people don't even notice that their dog is depressed," says Katherine A. Houpt, VMD, James Law Professor of Animal Behavior at the Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine. "That's because their dog is quiet and not giving them any trouble."
