Sep. 12--The Yankees traded Orlando Hernandez to Omar Minaya's Expos (through the White Sox) on Jan. 15, 2003, and I recall the palpable sense of relief the subsequent spring training. El Duque had worn on the Yankees, his steady stream of injuries and mood swings negating his intermittently excellent pitching.
Then the Yankees brought back Hernandez in March 2004, as he rehabilitated from right shoulder surgery, and hugs and laughter filled Legends Field. By August, El Duque had surged to become the Yankees' ace.
By October, he had a tired arm.
