WASHINGTON
Beset by skeptical senators, the commander of American forces in Iraq stuck to assertions Tuesday that the country is becoming more secure, but he acknowledged that at least 100,000 U.S. troops probably will be needed to support its government a year from now.
As President Bush prepared for a speech Thursday to announce plans to bring home 30,000 of the 160,000 soldiers and Marines in Iraq by next summer, Army Gen. David Petraeus said Americans should expect continued losses of around 60 soldiers and Marines per month in the fighting.
