Abdullah Gul, the Turkish FM, fails to win an outright majority in the first round of voting in the country's presidential elections. As candidate for the governing Justice and Development party (AKP), Gul scored 341 votes in the 550-seat parliament, 26 seats short of the two-thirds majority needed for his election. In Aug 20 first round of voting, Sabahattin Cakmakoglu, the candidate of the opposition National Movement party (MHP), scored 70 votes, with a third candidate, Tayfun Ilci of the Democratic Left party (DSP), scoring 13.
