Loopholes, secrecy expose women to infection
As documented by a recent retrospective investigation, the risk of HIV transmission through donated semen prior to 1986 was under-recognized. And while screening guidelines exist today, they lack the legal mandate that might be needed to make the procedure as safe as it should be, says one of the investigators.
In a recent article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers identified 230 women who were given semen from HIV-positive donors at five fertility clinics prior to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation for HIV screening of donor semen.
