In February of 2001, a designer by the name of Claude Brown was browsing through the swatch archives at a Garment District textile studio when he spotted a 3x3-inch square pink box of foil ashtrays displaying cartoon dogs dressed for a party. In script beneath each dog was an appropriately catty remark. (For a schnauzer wearing a fox stole, the words were "She got it wholesale." For a beret-wearing dachshund with a cocktail in its paw: "My third martini.") The ashtray set was one of several non-cloth curiosities that the studio's vintage-department head, Wendy Greenberg, offered for sale as objects of inspiration.
