Sep. 14--Jim Brochu knew his destiny when he was quite young: He was going to be the first Brooklyn-born pope.
Then he met Ethel Merman.
"I kept waiting for the religious moment that would affirm my going into the priesthood," said Brochu, who stars with his partner, Steve Schalchlin, in their two-man show "The Big Voice: God or Merman?" opening next week at Invisible Theatre.
"Then my father introduced me to Merman, and it was a religious experience when I saw her."
Ethel Merman was a Broadway and film star with a mammoth voice. One can easily imagine confusing it with God's.
