Covering 30 percent of the earth, and having the third largest number of species in any family, grasses feed an enormous variety of big game, provide cover for upland birds, and - in the form of wheat, corn, rice, oats and livestock - feed just about all of humanity. Sedges and rushes, which are grass lookalikes, also create nesting habitat for waterfowl along lakes, rivers and seashores, while all three families help in the thermoregulation of streams and play key roles in sustaining the insect life that feeds many game fish.
