Sep. 15--With the city slowly rebuilding its police ranks and starting new crime-fighting initiatives such as use of surveillance cameras, Allentown believes now is the time to get an outsider's opinion of how it should be fighting crime.

The city intends to hire a consultant, possibly at a cost of $100,000 or more, to spend the next year riding with officers, talking with residents, reviewing policies and measuring crime. The city wants a candid analysis of what's working, what's not, and how Allentown can move toward citywide community policing.
