Sep. 15--TVA pipefitter James Schumaker left his job at the Sequoyah Nuclear Power Plant on Friday to help pay back a 45-year-old childhood debt.
Mr. Schumaker joined nearly 400 other federal employees who spent the day away from their normal jobs to paint, clean, repair and do scores of other jobs for 34 area nonprofit agencies. The annual Day of Caring gave Mr. Schumaker the chance to return and help out the Children's Home/Chambliss Shelter in Chattanooga, where he lived when he was 5 and 6 years old in the early 1960s.
"It's a great chance to come back and help this place out," the 53-year-old Hixson resident said ...
