THE first test runs have taken place on the New Metro Rail tunnel under Perth, Western Australia, which forms the central part of a project to double the size of the city's commuter rail network.
The underground section of the 76km Southern Suburbs Railway consists of a 770m twin-bore tunnel under William Street, and 900m of cut-and-cover tunnel.
