After five always interesting years it might seem that Britain's largest gallery devoted solely to contemporary art is moving in a determinedly populist direction. It still stages some terrific shows. For instance, in the past few months there has been Marcus Coates's haunting video installation Dawn Chorus in which ordinary people spookily metamorphose into various species of British bird.
