INTRODUCTION
Peat represents the extreme form of soft soil. It is an organic soil which consists more than 70% of organic matters. Peat deposits are found where conditions are favorable for their formation. In Malaysia, some 3 million hectares of land is covered with peat. While in Indonesia peat covers about 26 million hectares of the country land area. Two third of the world coverage of tropical peat are in South East Asia. Since the coverage of peat soil is quite extensive, utilization of these marginal soil are required in the recent years.
