Den Hertog was a pastry baker, but in his spare time he liked to make ice cream. He used fresh milk, straight from the farmer, and real butter. In 1977, he decided to turn his hobby into a business: Den Hertog B.V.
Now part of Bols-Wessanen Holding, and based in Melissant, the company has become market leader in the Netherlands for ice cream in "baskets," with an annual turnover of 60 million florins and a payroll of 100. Its latest venture: ice cream with liqueurs.
