Sep. 17--Writers and filmmakers have devoted much energy in recent years to preserving the stories of the World War II generation before its members pass away completely.

There have been best-selling books such as Tom Brokaw's "The Greatest Generation" and Stephen Ambrose's "The Victors" and "Citizen Soldiers." Hollywood has even done its share through Clint Eastwood's acclaimed "Flags of Our Fathers."
