The only exaggerated claim in this modest but informative book is in the title. Even those who reject the term "enlightenment" for eighteenth-century England will find useful evidence and discussion in Jane Shaw's survey of published miracle accounts from seventeenth-century England.
Shaw contextualizes the later, more rationalistic critique of miracle accounts by describing the previous popular accounts in some detail. Her commentary frequently brings out interesting points along the way, especially in a chapter on the phenomenon of ...
