Sep. 18--Anti-abortion groups, also known as pro-life groups, have launched a legal fight to get their message onto Arizona license plates. It's an idea that appears unwise and illegal because it makes the state appear to be an advocate for one side in a very volatile debate.

License plates are intended as evidence that a vehicle has been registered with the state and a tax has been paid. That's the lowest common denominator in the world of license plates.

Our plates were never intended as billboards for political views. That's what bumper stickers are for.
