Sep. 18--MINNEAPOLIS -- Researchers trying to solve the national shortage of transplant organs have some eclectic approaches that read like science fiction.
There's the xenotransplanters, who want to use animal organs for human transplants. There are the cell experts who, among many other things, use muscle cells to repair failing hearts. And there's the islet transplanters, who in a single day harvest a million insulin-producing cells and inject them into a diabetic patient.
