DURING THE MORE ruminative moments of his new Speakerhood, Newt Gingrich enjoys describing himself as a "conservative futurist." Few people ever heard this phrase before he gave it utterance, and many listeners have imprudently dismissed it as a contradiction in terms. It would hardly be the first time that Democrats and their sympathizers in the press misjudged their adversaries, the public mood and the future itself.
