MOSCOW, Russia - World War II (1939-45) was the most destructive, most widespread, and most violent war in human history. Men fought and died from the snow-covered forests of northern Europe to the sandy deserts of Africa to the palm-lined beaches of the Pacific islands. At war's end, hundreds of cities lay in rubble and more than 38 million people lay dead.
Next week, the world will pause to remember those who died and what they fought for on the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.
