Beto D. Gonzalez relishes telling the story from third grade, when his school principal met him in the hall, bent down to tie his shoe and in the process inspired a life dedicated to human betterment through education.
"I guess he noticed my shoes were a little tattered," Gonzalez said, recalling the incident in the hall at the Kern Avenue School in McFarland, Calif. The principal took him to Wal-Mart to buy new shoes.
"He was a big man, 6-foot-2 and well over 200 pounds, so naturally it impressed me, and when I grew up he became a role model for me," Gonzalez said. "I wanted to be a principal for ...
