With today's high fuel costs, the case can be made that more horsepower is more luxury. We favor luxury through power. So, the 2008 Mercedes ML550 and GL550 SUVs, with larger, 5.5-liter engines transplanted from the S-Class, are luxurious even beyond their leather-and-wood-trimmed interiors. We drove pre-production versions-with 382 hp at 6000 rpm and 391 lb-ft of torque available from 2800 to 4800 rpm-and they offer an impressive combination of power, smoothness, surefooted handling and luxury.
