WASHINGTION -- One year after the plane crash that killed their president and unleashed genocide in neighboring Rwanda, Burundi mourners gathered at the Regina Mundi Cathedral in the capital city of Bujumbura April 6 to pray for peace.
They also raised a distressing question: How do you halt spasmodic violence between two ethnic groups, both of which fear genocide by the other and have good reasons for their fear?
This dilemma is at the top of the agenda of the Burundi people, regional governments and relief agencies alike as they seek to halt the spiraling of ethnic strife between Burundi's majority Hutus and minority Tutsis.
