It is sixty years since we have had a full scale commentary on Romans by an English-speaking Roman Catholic, and that we now have one by a scholar of Fitzmyer's erudition and eminence is a notable contribution to the modern study of Romans in particular and of Paul in general. It is so considerable in size, as well as impressive in quality, that it must be some time before all his exegetical decisions can be absorbed and responded to by other students of the letter. Nevertheless it is immediately evident that this is a major opus.
