A series of recent reports by researchers, partially funded by federal agencies, are creating a damning picture for oil and gas projects in Wyoming and Montana, and as a result, the government is stepping back and eyeing new tactics for energy leasing.
Taking a stand to make protection of sage grouse a primary concern, the Bureau of Land Management is pulling tens of thousands of acres from lease sales in Utah and Montana, as years of pushing by environmental groups, public officials and conservationists to get the sage grouse protected under the Endangered Species Act bears fruit.
