Goncalo alves is a Brazilian hardwood of contrasts. Its wood is reddish brown and punctuated with strong dark brown streaks. The contrast between the dark and light has spawned many nicknames for this wood around the world. Here in the United States it is sometimes called tigerwood and in the United Kingdom it has gone by the name zebrawood.
However, goncalo alves should not be confused with the other wood, zebrano, which is more often given the name zebrawood in the United States.
