The maintenance department will need to be supplied with various hand tools - picks, shovels, sledges, caulking tools; valve and hydrant wrenches; trench pumps; lighting equipment for night work; rubber boots, slickers, first aid equipment, and numerous other items. Many find it worthwhile to use power tools for this work. The use of one or more portable air compressors is common. An emergency truck, containing all these, ready to be sent instantly to a pipe break, frozen hydrant, or other emergency, is very desirable and is used by many cities.
