TWO more Asian countries re-joined the list of avian influenza-affected regions last week as Thailand and Japan rediscovered the H5N1 virus within their territories.
The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said on Jan. 16, Thailand confirmed its first outbreak of H5N1 in birds since last July.
OIE said Thailand is conducting its first intensive surveillance of the year, and this is the first finding. Approximately 2,100 birds either died or were culled in the outbreak, which started Jan. 9, in the Phitsanulok province in northern Thailand.
