WITH ethanol and sow gestation stalls dominating the headlines, it may seem as if the issue of antibiotic use in the pork industry has fallen by the wayside, but federal legislation dealing with antibiotics in livestock has been introduced for the third consecutive year. This time, the measure's Democratic sponsors have the majority of congressional membership on their side.
Sen. Edward Kennedy (D., Mass.), chair of the Health Committee, has introduced a bill called The Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act. The House version is sponsored by Rep. Louise Slaughter (D., N.Y.), who happens to be a microbiologist.
