Sep. 20--The day after being jerked from the lineup after swinging through a 3-0 take sign, infielder Brendan Ryan was recognized as the Cardinals' Rookie of the Year. Team broadcasters and other media voted on the award.
Ryan entered Wednesday hitting .308 with four home runs, 11 RBIs, 27 runs and five steals . However, he failed to make it past the first inning in Tuesday's 14-inning loss to the Philadelphia Phillies after missing a take sign on a 3-0 count. Ryan later told Tony La Russa he believed the count was 2-1 and had not paid attention to third-base coach Jose Oquendo.
