Sep. 20--HAMPTON ROADS -- A Williamsburg-James City County grand jury indicted a Newport News police officer Wednesday on charges of indecent liberties with a child and aggravated sexual battery.
James Sherman, 40, of Newport News, is charged in connection with the abuse of a girl under age 16 at a James City County residence between June 2005 and July 2006. Sherman is only charged with one specific incidence of abuse.
Sherman has worked for the police department for nine years as a patrol officer in the city's north precinct.
