Southwest's fortunes climb as US Airways loses altitude at Pittsburgh.

Sep. 20--US Airways and Southwest Airlines appear to be going in opposite directions at Pittsburgh International Airport.

US Airways has long been the region's dominant carrier, but its operations in Pittsburgh have shrunk from more than 500 flights a day early this decade to 110 now. And US Airways Chief Executive Doug Parker said last week that further cuts are being considered.

At the same time, Southwest has continually expanded its operations in Pittsburgh since launching service here in May 2005, most recently by adding three daily flights to Baltimore-Washington International in the spring. The Dallas-based airline now offers 23 flights ...
