In the first scene of "Eastern Promises," a gangster gets his throat slit while sitting in a barber's chair. In the second scene, a pregnant teenage prostitute collapses into a pool of blood on the tile floor of a drugstore. In the third scene, the mother dies during childbirth but the infant, covered in blood, survives.
At this point, I thought director David Cronenberg was going to try to figure out a way to spill blood in every single scene of "Eastern Promises." ("Hey, thanks for lunch, Steve! Ow, I stepped on a tack!") He does decant a few more quarts before all is finished, but otherwise "Promises" is a solid, involving crime ...
